The Alphas are a commander unit of the Mimic invasion force appearing in Edge of Tomorrow.
Overview[]
Alphas are physically larger, blue variants of Drones, and are psychologically-interconnected to the Omega; if an Alpha Mimic dies, a response is instantly triggered in the Omega that causes it to turn back time while retaining knowledge of the potential future. This mechanic allows the Mimics to adapt to any combat strategy, since they are capable of continuously turning back time until a favorable outcome is reached. Being the commander units, they can command lower units. After death, they petrify into obsidian and lose the blue glow.
According to Dr. Carter, Alpha Mimics are rare, only appearing approximately 1 in 6.18 million times.
Design[]
An Alpha is a larger and more robust version of the smaller Drones standing roughly twice as tall as the average human or around 10-12 feet and has a bright blue internal structure as opposed to the Drones more orange hue. While still having the Drones tripod stance and numerous whip like tendrils but has a slightly more defined head and torso with more visible eyes and a single row of black fangs giving it an almost reptilian appearance.

Origin[]
Like all other Mimics the Alpha hailed from the Omega but was far more rare than the subordinate Drones with one Alpha for every 6.18 million Drones. They served as the nerve cluster of sorts in the Mimic hive mind. In the event of one dying it would cause a reaction in the Omega rewinding time back a day and gaining the knowledge the Alpha learned giving them a powerful advantage in warfare.
Operation Downfall[]
During the Storming of Northern France at least one Alpha was present during the battle and lead thousands of Drones in combat. It would soon spot William Cage and lunged towards him, although he was able to kill its he was showered in its blood causing him to disintegrate but not before gaining its time warping ability much to the Omegas displeasure and decided to kill him in a way that would remove his newfound abilities thereby removing any risk of him disrupting is operations. It sent Cage false visions luring him into a Dam deep in the Bavarian Alps. Upon arrival Cage realized the Omega wasn't there before he could leave he was blocked off by an Alpha and Drone, realizing they weren't attacking he attempted to slit his throat but the Alpha unleashed a shock wave causing him to slit his wrist causing him to slowly bleed out. Realizing they were here for his blood Cage ran under a desk with the Drone grabbing at his legs and the Alpha pounding on the desk in anger, Cage was able to drown himself stopping them from stealing his ability. During the battle at the Louvre the Omega released a single Alpha to kill Cage and Rita in order to stop them from reaching it. Rita ran out towards the Alpha as a distraction while Cage went for the Omega. The Alpha caught up to Rita and bludgeoned her to death against a car before turning its attention towards Cage and swam after him. Halfway before he could reach the Omega the Alpha reached him and impaled him through the back causing him to bleed out but not revealing to the Alpha that he had already dropped the Grenades into the Omegas core. Horrified the Alpha could only scream in rage as the Omega exploded severing its connection to it. Now with out any life source the Alpha wailed in agony as it slowly died alongside every Mimic on earth.
Trivia[]
- Dr. Carter estimates the occurrence of alpha mimics to be approximately 1 in 6.18 million. This may be a reference to the golden ratio, which is approximately 1.618 to 1 (or 1 to 0.618), and is seen in the structures of some plants and animals.
